Speed Camera Are these a good idea or not! Hopefully the Motor Car Forum can add to the debate.

Lets be honest now. I hate it and probably you also hate it when some inconsiderate motorist zooms passed you in a built up area with no regards for your car or your safety. Most inconsiderate driving generally involves going faster than the normal flow of traffic and it is very selfish. Now despite what Mr Paul Smith likes to suggest speed cameras are only situated where you are likely to come accross another car, pedestrian or cyclist and in these areas speeding really isn't on is it? Your are putting others at risk and thats not really fair I'm sure you will agree. Obviously everybody just slows for the camera and speeds back up again but that is when they know the area and in those cases they probably have a better idea of where the dangers lie anyway. When I dont know an area the thought of getting snapped by a speed camera I dont know about really makes me aware that I should not speed which is definately a good thing with regards safety. I think we think more more about avoiding speeding fines when driving than worrying about our safety so obviously with that being on top of our minds we will consider speed cameras as being something out to get us and not to protect us. The reality is though that in the most dangerous areas people are forced to drive at speed less likely to cause damage and injury even if they crash.

Well I agree with most of that but isn't it annoying when they put a camera on the first straight bit of road after you have been stuck behind a slow truck etc for miles ! Number Plates

Hi Guys, thought i might add my bit to this, I'm not a big fan of speed camera's (always thinking their there to gain revenue that help people) but after living on a main road (30 speed limit) in a small village in wales where boy racers (youngsters with supedup corsa's and saxo's) go past my house doing 60mph +, with 3 chidren and a dog, i would be happy to see a camera on my road, what make's it even worse is there is a bypass that run adjustant to the main road, that connects at either end of the main road.

No problem with 30mph speed limits where there are pedestrians, kid,s dogs etc but I was done on a dead straight country road, 60mph limit , clear blue skies , no junctions, just the van in front which I had been stuck behind for miles. Personalised Number Plates

There is little doubt in my mind that speed cameras are sited to obtain maximum revenues, rather than to contribute to safety. The idea that Speed = Death has been carefully crafted and publisized over many years, to the point that most people accept the proposition, however there is very little in the way of solid research to support the idea that the accident rate increases with speed, in fact the opposite idea is better supported. The accident rate is greater in towns and cities than it is on Motorways. It is given that the severity of an accident will be greater with greater speed, however, pursuing that idea to the limit brings us back to a man walking in front of the car with a red flag. (A pretty dangerous job, by the way). Under the law in UK, a speed camera may only be sited at an accident blackspot. However, many are sited at other sites, and motorists just pay their fines, and take their points, when the camera is illegal, and they have not committed an offence. So stand up and fight the cameras, as they are a serious invasion of your liberty and rights. Argue with every ticket, make the police attend court for every one, and deny, deny, deny.

| speed cameras are good where there is a speeding problem. However, speed cameras are black and white in their judgement. I.e being caught at 33mph at 3am when there is no one around is annoying. Esp. when you know someone driving past on their mobile doing 30mph when the area is full of kids is seen as "legal" (apart from the mobile!)

Just cover your number plates Apparently some driver in Ireland actually got away with doing that! The full article is here

I agree that speed cameras serve a purpose to protect the general public, but they do put them in some rather obscure places. Surely common sense would prevail in a busy or built up area.
