The biggest threat for the govt. is inflation. If they can reduce inflation, why don't they reduce it.

The fact is, fuel prices fluctuate in a way that consumers have less direct control. When the prices are high, it is a time for austerity - we use our cars less. When they are low, it is a time for a holiday - we use our cars to the maximum. In either state, how many of us think that fossil fuel sources have short lifetimes (In 1990, Saudi oil was predicted to last for about 100 years -- so there are around only 80 years left). Our attitude is: let's cross the bridge when we get there.
