Default Boy Racer at 80+

I have a Nissan Bluebird Estate that will not behave when idling at lights, etc. It is rather embarrassing as I am over 80 and it sounds like I am ready to tear away when the lights turn to amber!!!
I can kick down and hear the revs change but then it comes back racing. The car was manufactured in 1986 and is a 2000 petrol engine with an automatic choke. I love the car and it has never let me down going through every MOT the first time and still in great condition bodywise, it is garaged.

Does anyone have any ideas, please?

Auto chokes were rarely a good idea. I have seen manual conversion kits but cant remember where. Otherwise, get a huge sound system fitted and complete the boy-racer image [p.s. baseball cap too, obviously]

Thanks for your reply Norseman, I will bare that in mind if I cannot cure it. The baseball cap may be one step too far but you never know!!!

I have been told that the unit is a sealed unit but could have a slight air leak and as the whole system works on water pressure then this could be my problem. I am totally at a loss...

Back in the days when autochokes were very common [and troublesome], Halfords sold manual kits and they were advertised in Carmechanics but it was some time back.
Afterthought - maybe you could exchange entire carb ?

dear davo
sorry to hear about dilemma, forgive me if i'm wrong, but from your messages to & from norseman, i feel that you're not mechanically inspired or experienced in any way, am i right?.
are you saying that your car won't idle & you have to keep it reving at junctions in order to prevent it from stalling or that it wont come out of auto-choke mode, ie constantling reving. please elaborate so i can begin to help you, as i have a better understanding of carbs than electronic fuel injection. look forward to your reply, dj dave.
