Question jumping needle

Hi newbie here,
Since Thursday morning the needle on the rev counter has been intermitently jumping, It's not accelerating the revs or anything else . Just jumping, does anyone know why it is doing this, I really can't afford anymore heafty repair bills as i had the handbrake cables and a new caliper done this wednesday.
Would this work have affected it? as it wasn't doing it before.
the car is a Rover 820 fastback P reg
