Default volvo 940 auto ( overdrive not working )

hi everyone
can you mechanics out there help a fellow mechanic ( who's a bit rusty , to say the least ) i own a 93 volvo 940 estate with athree speed auto trans plus overdrive. the prob is , as title says, overdrive not working. i've checked the fuse & it was ok, nevertheless i replaced it with a brand new fuse, still nothing.i've tried replacing the relay, but can't get the old one out, i believe they have small clips holding them in , but can't work out best way to release them. any suggestions for relay removal & solution to problem will be greatly appreciated.look forward to your replies

Default over-drive query

Hi, are you sure that the relay is faulty? If there is access to the wiring for the relay, you can test the function of the unit using a meter. also, can you get access to the solonoid that it controls? is the solonoid working?

Ian.

hi ian
thanks immensley for your help with my problem. no i,m not certain the relay is at fault,& yes wiring is accessable but not easy at all. let me explain, i'm quite heavily built & getting on in years, so not as supple as you youngsters, plus i only have one of those little halford's type trolley jacks, which don't lift very high at all & with the solenoid located at the top end of transmission ( tight to the trans tunnel ) & restricted access from inside as well you now can see why i'm going for the substitution option. the relay wiring is almost impossible to get at(located on fuse /relay board behind ashtray & under radio unit recess. what would be great is to find a member close to where i live, that has access to a decent garage ramp or pit. other than that i'm stumped. so there's my prob in full colour ian , any ideas look forward to your suggestions, regards dj dave
