Thread: Looking to buy a new car.

  1. Default Looking to buy a new car.

I live in Kuwait, where the roads used to be good but in recent years the road works has really gone to crap. My current car W220 '02 can't take the punishment it's suspension gets. A single strut comes out to be about 750$ I have replaced all four twice last year alone.

Road conditions: Hidden Pot holes, cracks, uneven roads, and over-sized Cat eyes (the reflectors on the road to guide which lane you are on).

The highways are starting to wear, I only see it getting worse. I originally planned to replace the car with a cayman S but with road as it, is that's a no go.

So what I am looking to replace it with is something that looks good, has luxury status, can laugh at the road conditions and still be nimble enough for spirited driving. A manual tranny is a plus. I have driven an ML W163 which was very nice to drive but I didn't like to look at it. The ML W164 was my normal choice but it has the transmission selector on the wheel which I really hate.

    I have been looking at:

Lexus LX570 (its a little ugly)
    Toyota Sequoia (not very nimble)
Range Rover Sport (I hear this a Lemon Car riddled with electrical problems)
BMW X6 (I like how it looks but It has very stiff suspension)
Wrangler (No Luxury status, but has a manual Tranny, very fun to drive)
Cadillac Escalade (I actually liked this car but I hate where the Tranny Selector is, and I have a bias on GM Build quality)

Please advice I am sure there are more cars that fit in this category. Thanks in advance.

Have you thought about the Toyota Landcruiser or Hilux?

Granted the Hilux is a pick-up but it's still got five seats (and judging by the old one, it's tough as well).

Lol I saw that episode, poor car.

I have chosen the LC200 VXR, it is booked and I am due to pick it up in 8 days.

I requested a test drive but the cars they had for test driving were all V6's so, so I will test the car when I go to pick it up.

If it feels as nimble as german cars I will surely buy it.

Its funny how you replied exactly a month later.

That should be just right for the condition of the roads you described.

There's a good reason why the UN uses Landcruisers.

i am surprised you haven't considered the range rover. when driving on the road is like being off-road you need long travel suspension and not too harsh shock absorbing. the range rover will cope with all that and still get around pretty quick with plenty of luxury too.
alternatively an older american car would be the answer. these are made to travel dirt roads at 60mph. also some of the japanese stuff that was made for america had added refinements to make them robust enough for that sort of treatment.

you cannot expect a road car (especially a modern one) to stand those sort of roads for long. if you insist on an ordinary motor you should specify as many suspension options as possible when you place your order (you might have to order a foreign model to get them); such things as reinforced tyres and wheels, increased ground clearance, driver selected adjustable shock absorbers, heavy duty bump stops/auxilliary springs, reinforced undertray and stone guards for the other vulnerable bits of the underside. it is amazing how much the specification is changed to make it possible to sell most cars in every corner of the world to a wide variety of people.

i agree with you about gm build quality.

I'd opt for the Volvo XC90 if I was you. It can take on all the challenges of anything Mother Nature throws in its path. Plus it has all the lovely luxuries some of the other off-roaders lack. Check out my reviews at carjourno to see what I mean

Sorry Verne, didn't see your reply, I thought about the Range Rover but most of my friends advised against it saying the car has alot of electrical problems and reliability problems. It's not that the roads are bad, the problem is that they are doing road works through out Kuwait at snail pace. They finish the area then they break it up again I have no clue what they are doing. It's been almost 3 years and looking at the size of Kuwait and the work pattern it will be a while before they are done.

@carjourno: Hmm Volvo is owned by Ford, and from what I have seen Ford doesn't really put an effort into their cars. I don't really know much about it, but I do know that parts are a bitch and pricey. However I would not buy the XC90 because it looks fugly. Thanks for the option though I didn't it was considered a real off-roader.
